Rubus intensior, originally described from Staffordshire (VC39) is now considered to be the same taxon as the southern R. transmarinus. These photos were taken of a single, low-growing bush on Southampton Common, Hampshire (VC11), growing on the southern edge of some woodland. It is similar to Rubus tuberculatus but the flowers are smaller, the leaflets are flat, mid green (not greyish) and not strongly rugose. The longest prickles on the stem are more numerous than in R. tuberculatus and gradually grade in size to the smaller ones. The main prickles on the stem of R. tuberculatus are more distinct, but the stems of both species can look very similar.
